Lonaconing, MD - April 18, 2007
While asking around for lunch suggestions in the furthest corner of Allegany County, MD, I was directed to Marshall's Confectionary in Lonaconing (which the locals seem to call "Coning," or maybe "Coney.") From the outside it looked rather run-down and sketchy, but inside it's a wonderful, nostalgic throwback to the 1950s-era drug stores. Without the, well, drugs. It's the kind of place you simply
don't see anymore, not even in little towns like this. It's the sort of place where you can get a squirt of any one of numerous flavors in your soda (something I did not notice when I placed my drink order, prompting me to go up to the counter and ask for a squirt of chocolate in my Coke
which was awesome.)
Up at the front, they had this seriously old-school weight and horoscope scale. Mouse over for a close-up view of the top assembly. Of course, before leaving I paid t5he penny to get my weight. I wasn't about to spring for the whole nickel.
Yes, I'm lying.
